Art and the Asylum: creativity and the evolution of psychiatry
Saturday 7 September – Sunday 3 November 2013
New exhibition coming to the Lakeside Arts Centre in Nottingham later this year. This exhibition presents the first examination of the evolution of artistic activity in British psychiatric institutions from the early 1800s to the 1970s.
Uncovering fascinating stories, this historical overview provides insight into the diagnostic and therapeutic use of patient artwork, its influence on the development of humane psychiatric practice, and its wider recognition by artists associated with Art Brut and so-called Outsider Art.
